The Blue Flag Award
Rhôs has held the Blue Flag for 2013. In 2011 and 2010 it didn't quite meet the criteria.
Beaches are awarded the Blue Flag based on compliance with 32 criteria covering the following:- Environmental Education and Information
- Water Quality
- Environmental Management
- Safety and Services

Rhôs-on-Sea is at the west end of the 3 mile sweep of Colwyn Bay. Like Llandudno,
Colwyn Bay developed with the railways during the Victorian era.
Its long seafront and promenade with refreshments kiosks has always
had a certain cachet and remains popular; people walking, biking,
fishing, enjoying the sea air. Unfortunately, the beach suffers from being
absent at high tide along most of its length, the sea lapping the sea wall, and the
Victoria Pier has been closed for several years now and
is in a sad state. A plush new water sports centre will be good but is still
under construction (completion autumn 2012).
So to Rhôs then, whose older history is evident in several of the buildings near the front
(check out the interesting town trail). Behind the breakwater is a sizeable maintained
beach to lounge or play on, just the ticket after a morning spent at the Mountain Zoo.
Being the centre of the village, all facilities
are nearby but the roads are busy.
Of particular interest is the
Harlequin Puppet Theatre -
performances most days at 3pm during the season.
Five minutes drive away, if a little exercise is needed, is the
limestone prominence of Bryn Euryn (Coed Craig on the google map), a local nature reserve.
Fine walking, views and historic points of interest.

From TyF, take the A55 east. Turn off at the first Colwyn exit (20), signposted Rhôs-on-Sea.
Turn left at the lights and then fourth exit at the roundabout, signposted promenade.
On busy days you may need to cruise around a bit to find a parking spot.
For Colwyn Bay, best exit is the third exit (22), Old Colwyn, onto the east end of the prom.
For Bryn Euryn, take the third exit at the roundabout mentioned above - Brompton Avenue.
Along this, at the traffic lights turn left. The lane to the parking for Bryn Euryn is almost directly
opposite at the top - spot the sign. Or, from the promenade,
go straight up Rhos Road (by the Caley Arms pub)
to the same traffic lights and straight on.
